Hello, friends. Since I first posted the list of top New York cocktail bars in November, there have been a few additions.
And, Booker and Dax, the semi-new bar at Momofuko Ssäm, and the Bar Downstairs at the Andaz Hotel have been elevated to the top five.
Both bars are trending in creating art via bitters on egg-whites. One of the bartenders at Booker and Dax is particularly gifted. He drew a motorcycle and a pretty snowflake design (not pictured) for CM when she ordered two rounds of the Mustachi-ode. The secret seems to be using a chopstick-size wooden stick to draw a design from one or several well-placed drops.
This is not what put them on the top five; the drinks taste as gorgeous as they look. At both, the staff is friendly and quick with tutorials, though there is a different style in each venue. Booker and Dax is all about technique and science--liquid nitrogen cools the glasses, hot pokers caramelize the winter drinks, and house-made extracts abound--CM and I tasted a horseradish tincture. The Bar downstairs is open, and warm, and you can find a seat at the bar on a Friday night, which is a wonderful rarity! The mixology is also top-notch.
Before we move on to the list, this month's cause is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden because the park is a beautiful haven in Brooklyn and because they have wonderful research and community programs that support the health of both people and plants--edible and otherwise. I became a member today!
